Title: Chief Executive Officer

Position Summary:
Performs the duties of Chief Executive Officer of Munising Memorial Hospital, the sole community health provider in Alger County, which includes a Critical Access Hospital and Bay Care Rural Health Clinic located in Munising, Michigan. Directs and coordinates all activities of the Hospital to achieve the objective of providing quality health care to the citizens of Munising, Michigan and surrounding areas. Responsible for the operation of the hospital, application and implementation of policies and the liaison to the Board of Directors, Medical Staff, departments of the hospital, and the community. Employs qualified personnel and ensures staff education and evaluation. Takes an active role in the implementation of an effective budgeting and accounting system. Participates and represents the hospital’s interest in community and health care related organizations within the area and State.


Position Relationships:
Responsible to a 7 member Elected Board of Trustees.


Positions Directly Supervised:
Chief Financial Officer, Chief Nursing Officer, Chief Medical Officer, Executive Leadership Team and ultimately responsible for all hospital staff.


Major Functions of the Position:

  • Provide strong leadership, team building and role modeling for the managers, supervisors, and employees of the hospital.
  • Develop and maintain a good working relationship with the medical staff to facilitate and ensure a collaborative environment in carrying out the task of providing quality patient care.
  • Respond to inquiries relative to policy interpretation and general administration of the hospital.
  • Ensure the continued financial viability of the hospital through prudent and efficient use of resources. Facilitate the development of the annual operating budget to be presented to the Board of Trustees each year.
  • Evaluate the performance of the Management Team. Within organizational and financial constraints, identify managers to take on greater responsibility and develop appropriate succession planning.
  • Ensure the most effective means of communication exists for appropriate internal, interdepartmental, medical staff, Board of Trustees, and external/community communications in support of and consistent with the hospital’s vision, mission, goals and strategic initiatives.
  • Be personally involved in related organizations, both professional and civic, as a representative of the hospital.


Education, Training and Experience; Certification/Licensure:

A Bachelor of Science Degree in Healthcare Administration or a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance. A minimum of five years of acute care hospital senior leadership experience.


A Master’s Degree in Health Administration or a Masters of Business Administration with an emphasis in Healthcare. Member of the American College of Healthcare Executives.


Additional Requirements:
Residence within Alger County is required and must be established within 6 months of hire date.

Volunteer Program

September 2017, MMH launched our Volunteer Program after the auxiliary dissolved in early 2017. The goal is for MMH to once again become the Community Hospital by getting the community involved and volunteering. Currently, there are 4 different positions available to volunteers: Greeter, Cafe, Special Events, and Patient Activities.
